The Storm 2020 Indigenous Jersey Story
“My name Kyya Nicholson Ward.
The jersey’s nickname is “Jindi Worobak”, meaning “Joint and Unite” in Woiwurrung. This language is spoken by my people, Wurundjeri who are the traditional custodians at Narrm (Melbourne). This is my way to as an artist acknowledge the players and workers, volunteers, fans, and others who joined forces to create Melbourne Storm.
Aami Park is represented in the center circle of the jersey. White circles represent the supporters and crowd who unite to support the player. It signifies that when we all come together, we are stronger.
The Birrarung is the Yarra River, which is a significant and sacred river to my people. Woiwurrung has Birrarung meaning “river in the mists”. This means that the mist dances alongside the river at dawn. This is connected to my dreamtime/creation stories. As Aboriginal culture and Aboriginal people know, circles do not have a beginning or an end. The ripple effect of the circles is symbolized by one person teaching stories and culture to others and then that knowledge being passed along from generation-to-generation.
The wangiam or one-gim is used to represent the player’s unique strength, particularly their speed, power and agility. It also emphasizes the importance having a goal and an objective in your daily life.
The lines at the outside of the jersey are symbolic of strength. They were used on the shields, weapons, and shields of my ancestors. This is because here we don’t have dessert, which is why dot art originated. My people carve the landscapes that tell our people’s story.
Each Torres Strait Islander or Aboriginal Storm player is represented by the boorimul, (emu) footprints. The boorimul footprints commemorate their unique journeys towards a bright future and success. The significance of the boorimul footprints is that the boorimul never steps backwards. This signifies that players are acknowledging their pasts while focusing on what lies ahead.
On the back, you will see the names of the past Aboriginal and TSI players for Melbourne Storm. This is to recognize them for their contributions to Indigenous round.
