Australia’s first Reconciliation Holiday holiday was created by the ACT. With tripartisan support of the ACT Legislative Assembly on Thursday, 14 September 2017, a bill to amend Australia’s Holidays Act was passed. This public holiday annually recognizes the anniversary of 1967’s Australian Referendum. It also marks National Reconciliation Week.
This was called the Australian Referendum by the Holt Administration. Two amendments were made to the Australian constitution in order to address Indigenous Australians. The amendments received overwhelming support with 90.77% voting in favour and being carried in each state. These amendments included sections 51(xxvi), 127, and 227. It was decided that Aboriginal Australians would be included in the determinations regarding the population. The Federal Legislature was empowered to expressly legislate for the Aboriginal Australians.
The amendments were not designed to grant Aboriginal persons the right to vote. It had been adopted in 2012 and citizenship was not granted. Many of the discriminatory federal-state laws against Aboriginal people were already repealed before 1967.
